FAIRFIELD – A significant cyberattack has severely disrupted the library computer system across Solano County, resulting in the suspension of public internet services and internal record-keeping operations. Patrons now face handwritten process for borrowing books due to the system's paralysis.
Hackers have taken responsibility for the breach, threatening to unveil data they claim to have stolen from the library unless a ransom of $100,000 is paid by the end of the week. The specifics of the data remain uncertain, but it could involve sensitive details regarding library personnel.
The library system, which serves nine locations throughout the county including Dixon, Fairfield, Suisun City, Rio Vista, Vacaville, and Vallejo, first made patrons aware of the computer outages via a Facebook announcement on April 5. "Computer services, phone lines, and WiFi are down at all library locations,” the post read.
As of Monday, there has been no definitive timeline provided regarding the restoration of library computers. The ongoing situation is raising concerns among community members who rely on these services.

“Upon learning of the activity, we responded quickly to confirm the security of our systems and to work toward restoring full functionality as soon as possible,” Flanagan said.
