FAIRFIELD – A significant cyberattack has severely disrupted the library computer system across Solano County, resulting in the suspension of public internet services and internal record-keeping operations. Patrons now face handwritten process for borrowing books due to the system's paralysis.
Hackers have taken responsibility for the breach, threatening to unveil data they claim to have stolen from the library unless a ransom of $100,000 is paid by the end of the week. The specifics of the data remain uncertain, but it could involve sensitive details regarding library personnel.
The library system, which serves nine locations throughout the county including Dixon, Fairfield, Suisun City, Rio Vista, Vacaville, and Vallejo, first made patrons aware of the computer outages via a Facebook announcement on April 5. "Computer services, phone lines, and WiFi are down at all library locations,” the post read.

As of Monday, there has been no definitive timeline provided regarding the restoration of library computers. The ongoing situation is raising concerns among community members who rely on these services.
"unexpected activity"
“Upon learning of the activity, we responded quickly to confirm the security of our systems and to work toward restoring full functionality as soon as possible,” Flanagan said. He confirmed that specialists have been contracted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the breach and evaluate any damage incurred.
Impact and Legacy
Despite the comprehensive measures taken, Flanagan mentioned that the investigation does not indicate that the cyberattack has impacted other county computer systems.

Multiple sources familiar with the event revealed the attack's nature, suggesting it originated from a cyberattack that has rendered the library's computer system inoperable. One source recounted that a library printer produced a warning message stating, "you have been penetrated by Medusa."
Reports indicate that Medusa is a ransomware group linked to attacks on at least 119 systems nationally last year, including three school districts targeted within a single week. In typical ransomware scenarios, hackers usually encrypt essential data, demanding a ransom for its restoration and threatening to release sensitive information if their demands are unmet.
In a separate incident in Minneapolis, hackers associated with Medusa leaked damaging data related to teacher misconduct and student psychological assessments.
Race Results
The implications of such breaches are profound, with a previous attack on the city of Oakland resulting in the public release of hundreds of gigabytes of sensitive data, including personal information about city employees and job applicants. This led to significant litigation against the city as a consequence of the breach.
Impact and Legacy
As the investigation continues, community members remain apprehensive about the potential ramifications of the stolen data and the impact on their library services. The county is prioritizing urgent responses to secure their systems while navigating the complexity of the situation.
The current crisis underscores the consistent threat posed by cybercriminals to public institutions. The reliance on technology for operational efficiency makes libraries, and similar entities, vulnerable targets for nefarious activities. More updates are awaited as authorities work towards a resolution to restore normalcy and ensure the security of both the library system and its users.
